Autonomous Mining Trucks: The Future Already at Work Today

At the beginning of 2026, specialists from Heavy Equipment Sp. z o.o. visited one of the largest open-pit mines in Northern China, where they examined the operation of a modern autonomous haulage system. The site operates more than 500 mining dump trucks, 350 of which work in fully autonomous mode.
All autonomous vehicles are connected to a single fleet management system. The entire fleet is coordinated by a dispatch center staffed by only eight operators per shift. This makes it possible to control hundreds of machines efficiently without involving a large number of personnel.
Operational experience shows that autonomous dump trucks deliver 10–15% higher productivity compared with driver-operated vehicles. Unmanned equipment works continuously, eliminates errors associated with the human factor, maintains an optimal travel speed, follows assigned routes precisely, and ensures a stable production cycle.
The most important advantage of autonomous operation is safety. The system eliminates risks associated with driver fatigue, inattention, or incorrect actions. Continuous monitoring of the surrounding environment is carried out by LiDAR sensors, cameras, and machine vision systems, which constantly analyse road conditions and enable the equipment to perform all production operations safely.
Importantly, autonomous dump trucks do not depend on the permanent availability of a communication channel. Even in the event of a temporary loss of connection, the vehicle continues to move safely using its onboard sensors, cameras, LiDAR systems, and control algorithms.
Another significant advantage is the reduced demand for personnel. Under a traditional operating model, approximately four drivers are required to operate one mining dump truck around the clock. An autonomous system eliminates this requirement entirely, which is particularly relevant given the severe shortage of qualified drivers currently affecting Ukraine.
During the visit, particular attention was paid to SANY autonomous mining dump trucks operating at the site as part of contractors’ fleets. The entire fleet is integrated into a single dispatch center, ensuring high productivity, maximum safety, and a significant reduction in operating costs.
